In an effort to provide free parking, the Town Council has to pay Powys County Council, in effect for the loss of revenue that it would otherwise have recieved.
Town Councillors will next week be told that the cost of this, for both those two days was £1,067. In practive, this results in a cost of around 23p per household when splitting this cost across the approximately 4,475 households in Newtown.

Personally, this is a fantastic use of iniaitive by the town council and something I've asked previously. For 23p per household, the economic benefit and impact on the town by providing free parking massively outweighs the cost incurred.
Let's hope that the Town Council uses this new ability in which it can provide 'free' parking at other events in the year, such as the Food Festival.
