A meeting of Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council to be held on 05/02/24 at 18:30.
Join the meeting on Microsoft Teams »Town Councillors are set to consider a proposal for an event to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings.
The Economy & Environment Committee of the Town Council will meet on Monday, February 5th, to discuss the plans, which stems from the Full Council's decision to delegate the planning responsibility to the committee.
The D-Day landings, a pivotal moment during World War II on June 6, 1944, marked a turning point in history. Over 156,000 troops participated in Operation Overlord, with the objective of establishing a secure beachhead in Nazi-occupied Western Europe. The sacrifices made on D-Day stand as a symbol of courage, determination, and the pursuit of freedom.
The proposed event, set for the evening of June 7, 2024, at the Town Hall lawns, aims to provide an "atmospheric summer evening setting for solemn reflection" and celebration, according to the report by officers.
The event will consist of era specific music, possibly involving the Newtown Silver Band; involve local schools and community groups and explore a picnic setting, encouraging attendees to bring picnic blankets.
Councillors will also discuss collaborating with town businesses to provide themed food offerings and promotions to visitors.
