Town Councillors have agreed to write to Powys County Council to support Penygloddfa C.P. School in improving road safety in the area.

At the Full Council meeting on 27th June 2022, Town councillors resolved a motion brought by forward by Cllr Pete Lewington and Cllr Mike Childs, concerning road safety for children and parents attending Penygloddfa CP School, Newtown.  It follows correspondence earlier this year between School Governors, Town Council Economy & Environment Committee and Powys County Council.

At the meeting, Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council agreed to write again to Powys County Council requesting strongly that they re- look at ways to improve safety for those walking and cycling in the area around school, specifically that the visibility of the pedestrian crossings be increased by repainting, raising the walkway and improved warning lights

In its letter to Powys County Council, Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council also reiterated the concerns of both the school and local residents that speeding traffic is a constant issue not only at school pick up and drop off times when the safety concerns are further heightened due to the very young children present.

The Town Council remains of the view that visible and functioning traffic calming measures are needed as a matter of urgency rather than a retrospective measure after a serious accident or fatality had occurred when it would be too late. It also considers the zebra crossing to be an integral part of the safe route to school as well as creating a safe route for pedestrians.

Following debate, Newtown & Llanllwchaiarn Town Council resolved to write to Powys County Council to support the school’s call for the safety improvements.
