Two local residents, Gwyn Cole and Daniel Spilsbury, have submitted their personal statements to be considered for the position.

Gwyn Cole
Gwyn Cole, who has called Newtown home since 1987, emphasized their deep connection to the town and community. “There is no place like home, and Newtown has been my home since 1987, when I and my parents moved to Newtown from Zimbabwe,” Mr Cole stated. He expressed a strong desire to give back to the town and support its development through the council.
Although he acknowledges being new to the role, they highlight their adaptability and eagerness to learn. “I’m a fast learner and excited to contribute if this application for the role is successful,” he shared.
With a diverse career spanning software engineering and filmmaking, Mr Cole brings a unique skill set. “Filmmaking has given me a great appreciation of people, community, and the amazing things people can achieve!” they added.
Mr Cole aims to bring a positive mindset and enthusiasm to the council, focusing on making Newtown a “more prosperous and happy town.”
Daniel Spilsbury
Daniel Spilsbury, a native of Newtown who returned to the area two years ago, emphasized his commitment to addressing local challenges and building on the council’s recent progress.
“I understand the local challenges and needs of residents but also celebrate the progress Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council has achieved in recent years, in improving our local community,” Mr Spilsbury said.
With a background in law and experience in operations, governance, and commercial industries, Mr Spilsbury is focused on sustainability, improving town services, and boosting local tourism. “If elected, I would like to assist in improving town services and giving a voice to residents, and with my experience, I believe I would be able to assist in this and make a difference,” he stated.
He sees the role as a chance to contribute meaningfully to the town’s future.
Town councillors will vote on which person gets the position.
