Newtown residents and visitors are encouraged to participate in the twelve-week engagement exercise initiated by Powys County Council to gather opinions on the draft Powys Sustainable Resource Strategy.

The proposed strategy aims to enhance recycling efforts in the region - which could potentially transitioning residual waste bin collections from three-weekly to four-weekly cycles. This move is intended to bolster recycling practices, align with Welsh Government targets, and foster a more sustainable approach towards waste management.

The draft Powys Sustainable Resource Strategy (2025-2030) prioritizes several key objectives, including reducing waste generation, promoting reuse and recycling, and encouraging a shift towards a circular economy. By actively involving stakeholders in the decision-making process, the council seeks to develop a comprehensive plan that resonates with the community's sustainability goals.

Cllr Jackie Charlton, Cabinet Member for a Greener Powys, emphasized the importance of engaging with residents and stakeholders: "When developing strategies, it is important to involve our stakeholders in the process."

Residents are encouraged to share their perspectives on waste reduction, recycling practices, and potential support mechanisms to enhance recycling initiatives. The council is eager to receive feedback on the proposed strategy's priorities and suggestions for minimizing environmental impact, reducing carbon footprint, and fostering a greener community.

Cllr Charlton further highlighted the collective effort required for a sustainable future, stating, "Everyone of us can make a positive difference, and our stakeholders' voices will help ensure the strategy is clear, comprehensive, feasible, and supported by the community."

The engagement exercise invites residents and visitors to contribute their insights by visiting the official consultation platform here.

The deadline for providing feedback is set for April 4, 2025.
