Town councillors are set to discuss a detailed proposal concerning two street planters on Wesley Street during an upcoming committee meeting.
The report, prepared by the Operations Manager, outlines a plan for Newtown and Llanllwchaiarn Town Council to take over responsibility for maintaining the planters, originally provided by Powys County Council as part of a COVID-19 recovery initiative.

The planters have been a point of concern since no formal arrangement for their upkeep was made after their installation. The proposal includes obtaining a license from Powys County Council, repainting the planters, and making improvements to their design and positioning.
The report suggests leaving one planter in its current location on Wesley Street while relocating the second planter to Broad Street, between McCartneys and the Gulshan Indian Restaurant. The aim is to enhance aesthetic balance, improve greenery distribution, and make the planters more accessible to the public.
Additionally, the planters would be repainted in Barn Black to give them a sleek, uniform appearance. Bay trees are proposed as the primary plants due to their hardy, low-maintenance nature and year-round appeal. Seasonal flowers would be added around the base for extra vibrancy.
According to the report, these changes will complement nearby Robert Owen Gardens and create a consistent streetscape while ensuring cost-effective maintenance. A maintenance schedule involving the Council's Operations Team and volunteers is also recommended to ensure the planters remain in top condition.
The Operations Manager has recommended that the Services Committee authorise the necessary licenses and relocation permissions from Powys County Council to proceed with the project.
